Thursdays Thought-Cheeky Changes

There is a certain relief in change, even though it be from bad to worse! As I have often found in travelling in a stagecoach, that it is often a comfort to shift one’s position, and be bruised in a new place. ~Washington Irving

What a delightful quote, it made me chuckle a bit, and then to laugh out loud. I wanted a quote about change to piggyback on yesterdays subject of seasons and cycles of change. Naturally there are many cheery, optimistic and inspirational quotes about change but I chose this one for it’s realism and simplicity. In truth it speaks to our adaptable nature and resiliency. Those of us who have endured difficult times have often had to trade one discomfort for another in order to reach a destination. Maybe you’ve gone from a crappy marriage to a life of poverty as a single parent. Or perhaps you’ve left behind a drug addiction to spend 3 months in a treatment center with four crabby roommates and limited freedom. What ever situation caused us to exchange one bruised butt cheek for another, we eventually made it to the end of the Stagecoach ride, bruised, but having found a new and different place.
How have you “bruised your butt cheeks” to arrive at a destination?

    Hi Jenny-
Change can definitely be painful, but that let's me know I'm still alive and kicking. Love the quote…so appropriate!

I had no idea Washington Irving could be so funny! I like the image of traveling by stagecoach. I've only seen them in Westerns. Hmmm…what would that be like?

I certainly have been on physical journeys in which it was “a comfort to shift one's position, and be bruised in a new place.” Our inner stagecoach journeys of lurching and resting strengthen us.

Jenny, having gone through a couple of years and more of physical pain and symptoms, from illness: I certainly learned that no matter how unpleasant or painful a sensation, there is very often a worse or even more irritating one. So as the physical reactions alter and shift, a new and perhaps particularly irritating and peculiar pain is one change which can for sure bring a relief or distraction to the previous nasty one….. likewise, if the kids are driving you crazy with whining and other offenisve sounds, it is quite extraordinary how a car alarm in the street which won;t stop, can then be the change which pushes other sounds into the background…. I won't actually go so far as to advocate bashing oneself over the head in order to provide relief from sore knees, for example. But it's at least an amusing thought…. xx eva
